Race Report: Summer Series Race 3 - 28 June '09

Sunday the 28th of June saw 7 boats on the Crouch Yacht Club’s line for race 3 of the summer series. Unfortunately due to equipment problems Blue Movie was forced to retire before the start. When the course was being set the wind was quite light and fickle, so the decision was to send fleet down river on the last of the ebb to Horse Shoal with a loop around number 1 and then a run up the river to number 11, finally rounding number 5 before finishing back on the club line.
Just before the start the wind steadied down to a 9 knot easterly. Oliver Southgate’s projection 762 Proper job was closest to the start but had not reached full boat speed and was quickly overtaken by...

Race Report: Summer Series Race 2 - 21 June '09

On a light airs day, boats were sent to Cliff, Canewdon twice. Returning through the line at just after 12.00, the fleet were sent on to No. 3 and unfortunately on the way back the wind died. Once Proper Job (Oliver Southgate) had retired after touching a buoy, places changed significantly given the lack of wind and building foul tide. Eventually, Bob Tubbs in Scaramouche crossed the line first followed by Moondust. The winner on corrected time was Moondust followed by Bob Tubbs in Scaramouche and Philip and Sally Harbott in Mantra.

Report: Crouch Yacht Club Open Day 06 June '09 - Big Success

The Crouch Yacht Club initiative to invite people to experience Yacht Sailing at their Open Day on 06 June was an absolute success.

The offer to enjoy a yacht sailing experience on the River Crouch was specifically aimed at people who hadn’t had the opportunity to try sailing in the past and who may not know how they could get involved. The Club is particularly keen to make the sport more accessible – especially to those living in Burnham itself. Owners kindly put forward their boats, skills and crew to provide an hour and a half of river time for all our guests. The experience on offer was the chance to go onboard, help set the sails and cruise the river for about an hour. 35 happy people took up...

Report: Feature Race Weekend - 13 & 14 June '09

The weekend of 13/14 June was a feature race weekend with a race to Harwich on Saturday and a race back on Sunday. Six boats were on the start line on Saturday for the Puxley Trophy with 4 yachts cruising in company and 2 motor boats carrying the camp followers. The weekend was graced with glorious weather and the race to Harwich was a starboard tack reach all the way with spinnakers set from the Spitway. Sunday’s race back for the Grayling Bowl was a little more trying with the wind more fickle and on the nose. On Saturday evening over 50 members sat down for dinner in the Shipwreck Restaurant at Shotley marina. The Crouch Yacht Club Commodore Paul Drew won the race to Harwich in his First 29...

Race Report: Croach Race / Summer Series Race 1 - 7 June '09

The race marked the start of the Crouch Yacht Club’s Summer Series, it was also the Croach Race which forms part of the Victory Cup feature race series. The Croach race has only 2 marks Short Pole Reach at the top of the Crouch and Wade at the top of the Roach. Crews may sail the course in either direction.
Ten thirty saw seven boats on the start line and all elected to start down river beating into the easterly breeze. However before they had cleared the town the wind had swung round to the west and freshened and spinnakers were set. Good progress was made by the fleet and all passed back through the line within the hour. Unfortunately the wind then dropped and it was a long beat...
