Swallow Tail Bank / Ron Pipe Buoy – Shoaling and Encroachment into Channel

Following recent hydrographic surveying of the Whitaker Channel and the area of the Swallow Tail Bank it is clear that the Swallow Tail Bank is shoaling and is extending both in an east and west direction. In particular the passage between the Swallow Tail Bank and the Buxey Sand is narrowing in the vicinity of the Ron Pipe Buoy (SWM, unlit). The channel remains deep however with at least 4.00m depth at LAT.

The edge of the Swallow Tail bank in this location is extremely steep, with shoal/drying areas close south of the deep channel.

It is intended to carry out an...

Feature Race Weekend: Lodestar Trophy & Grayling Bowl - Sat 26th & Sun 27th June 2010

This weekend saw the Crouch Yacht Club race to Shotley and back as part of the annual Victory Cup series. On Saturday there was a strong North Easterly wind making conditions difficult for the fleet, especially as a number of the boats were short-handed. Inn Spirit helmed by Nick Poole were first over the line but on handicap the winner of the Grayling Bowl was Paul Drew and crew in Harvest Moon. Alan Bartlett’s Inn Spirit was second with Mick Willet and team in Polaris III third.

On the Sunday race back for the Lodestar Trophy and in relatively light airs, the bigger boats stretched their legs on a long fetch back to the Swin Spitway and then pulled away further in the River Crouch finishing in good time to...

Two Handed Race 2 - Sunday 20 June 2010

Sunday was the second race in the two handed series.
Five entries tuned up on the line in the IRC division and the results on corrected time were extremely close. The eventual winner was Inn Spirit sailed by Ian Hart and Colin Harris.
It was good to see local handicap entry Hoolet turn up on the line and please spread the word that this is beginning to attract interest.

Summer Series Race 2 - Sunday 13 June 2010

On Sunday, 13th June it was the Crouch Yacht club’s second race in their Summer Series.  With the wind blowing in a Southerly direction the course was set to take the boats into the River Roach in order for them to achieve windward/leeward legs.  All the boats set off from the start flying spinnakers and soon were making their way down the River.  When the boats again came into sight of the Race Box Encore owned by Paul Trueman was leading the race from Mantra (Phillip and Sally Harbott) followed by Harvest Moon (Paul Drew).  This is the order they crossed the line but after applying the handicaps the winner was Harvest Moon followed by Mantra and Encore in third place.

Next week is the second race in the Two Handed Series...

Summer Series Race 1 - Sunday 6 June 2010

On Sunday, 6th June was the first race in the Crouch Yacht Club’s Summer Series and Race Officer Anita Baynham decided, due to very lights winds and misty conditions, to postpone the start of the race by fifteen minutes in order to ascertain if the boats could make headway against the tide. With the decision made to race the course was set for Fairway 15, Fairway 7, Fairway 13, Fairway 7, Fairway 13 and Fairway 7. The wind was Easterly to begin with so the boats set spinnakers and made slow progress against the tide to No 15. On the way back to No 7 the wind strength went up and down. Encore rounded No 7 quite easily but Harvest Moon and Mantra struggled as...

Two Handed Race 1 - Sunday 23 May 2010

Sunday was the first of the three-race two handed series and also a trophy race for the Munford Cup, part of the Crouch Yacht Club Victory Cup series. Race Officer John Pawley had nominated the series as non-spinnaker attracting 9 boats including two local handicap. Rupert Brown and son Arthur made their first racing start in their new boat Goosander. In light airs, competitors made a running upriver start completing a course that took them to Cliff, around Canewdon and with a finish shortened at the CYC  line. On corrected time the winner of the IRC class was Wam Bam sailed by Eddie Clay and Frank Curtis from Piers Stanbury and Guy Warry in Blue Movie. The winner of the local handicap was Moondust.

The America’s Cup Arrives in San Francisco – 19 February 2010

Michael and Pat Whitehead happened to be in San Francisco when the Victory Tour and Civic Reception for the BMW Oracle Racing Team took place. The team had won the 33rd America’s Cup competition against Alinghi and brought the cup back to San Francisco. Pat took this photograph at the public ceremony: it shows the team and the cup outside the City Hall. Michael emailed it and others, which are now in the photos section, together with this message: “We tried to get an invite to the Golden Gate Yacht Club reception but they did not think we were important enough, I can understand that!”

Race Report: Nutcracker Race 2 - Sunday 06 December '09

The second race of the Nutcracker Series had 8 boats come to the start. The course was set No. 15, Cliff, Canewdon, Cliff, Canewdon, Black Point, No 13, No 3, No 15, Cliff Reach, No 13 and No 7. After a very wet start the sun came out and the wind blew. It was a marvelous sight as the majority of boats managed to set spinnakers coming down the river when passing the Club on both occasions. In Class One the winner was The Geek owned by Ian Langston and Partners followed by Inn Spirit (Alan Bartlett) and Assarain IV (Angus Bates). In Class Two the winner was Double Trouble owned by Duncan & Beccy Haley followed by Quencher (Roger Noble) and Mantra (Phillip &...

Race Report: Nutcracker Race 1 - Sunday 29 November '09

On a squally day with mainly Southerly winds and with frequent heavy showers four class 1 boats and six class 2 boats came to the line. The course was set to take the boats into the Roach to enable a couple of windward/leeward legs with both classes doing the same course as there is an overall prize at the end of the Series. As a severe squall came through just before the start, one of the boats decided not to take part and went back into the Marina. The rest set off with spinnakers being raised. The race was shortened as the boats came back past the Club before they were due to go upriver to Cliff Reach. The winner of Class 1 was Inn...

Harry receiving the Harrison
Shield from Paul (May 4 2009)
Sunday November 01 2009

It is my very sad duty to report that Harry Croker died on Saturday 31st October.
A great friend and yachtsman, with his name on every trophy in the Crouch Yacht Club trophy cabinet and two EAORA overall wins under his belt, he will be very sorely missed.
Paul Drew

The Funeral was held on Thursday 19th November at the Forest Park Cemetry & Crematorium and afterwards at Wanstead Golf Club.

Race Report: Crews and Ladies Races - 27 September '09

Sunday saw 4 boats on the CYC line for the start of the crews race. There was a fickle 4 knots of breeze from a south westerly direction and the Race Officer sent them off up river to Cliff Reach. Double Trouble, Harvest Moon and Scaramouche III all made good starts Encore was over the line but soon returned and set off in pursuit. The boats traded tacks up the north shore with Double Trouble helmed by the “DT Massive” slowly pulling away. The Race Office shortened course at the club line on the leg down river with Double Trouble finishing first on the water and winning handsomely on corrected time from Harvest Moon.

There was a quick turnaround and the Race Officer sent the competitors for...

The Houghton Cup originally was an 82 mile night race taking the fleet to and from the Crouch via the Sunk and Cork Light Vessels. This trophy, from the Crouch YC was originally presented in 1911 by Sidney Houghton, who was noted for his 1921 single-handed transatlantic crossing from Halifax, Novia Scotia to Burnham. This race now always takes place on the first day of Burnham Week. Courses are between 42 and 50 miles in length, starting from the Branklet buoy at the mouth of the Roach, travelling to the Swin Spitway...
