Race Report: Nutcracker Race 2 - Sunday 06 December '09

The second race of the Nutcracker Series had 8 boats come to the start. The course was set No. 15, Cliff, Canewdon, Cliff, Canewdon, Black Point, No 13, No 3, No 15, Cliff Reach, No 13 and No 7. After a very wet start the sun came out and the wind blew. It was a marvelous sight as the majority of boats managed to set spinnakers coming down the river when passing the Club on both occasions. In Class One the winner was The Geek owned by Ian Langston and Partners followed by Inn Spirit (Alan Bartlett) and Assarain IV (Angus Bates). In Class Two the winner was Double Trouble owned by Duncan & Beccy Haley followed by Quencher (Roger Noble) and Mantra (Phillip &...

Race Report: Nutcracker Race 1 - Sunday 29 November '09

On a squally day with mainly Southerly winds and with frequent heavy showers four class 1 boats and six class 2 boats came to the line. The course was set to take the boats into the Roach to enable a couple of windward/leeward legs with both classes doing the same course as there is an overall prize at the end of the Series. As a severe squall came through just before the start, one of the boats decided not to take part and went back into the Marina. The rest set off with spinnakers being raised. The race was shortened as the boats came back past the Club before they were due to go upriver to Cliff Reach. The winner of Class 1 was Inn...

Harry Croker: Message from the Commodore

Harry receiving the Harrison
Shield from Paul (May 4 2009)
Sunday November 01 2009

It is my very sad duty to report that Harry Croker died on Saturday 31st October.
A great friend and yachtsman, with his name on every trophy in the Crouch Yacht Club trophy cabinet and two EAORA overall wins under his belt, he will be very sorely missed.
Paul Drew

The Funeral was held on Thursday 19th November at the Forest Park Cemetry & Crematorium and afterwards at Wanstead Golf Club.

Race Report: Crews and Ladies Races - 27 September '09

Sunday saw 4 boats on the CYC line for the start of the crews race. There was a fickle 4 knots of breeze from a south westerly direction and the Race Officer sent them off up river to Cliff Reach. Double Trouble, Harvest Moon and Scaramouche III all made good starts Encore was over the line but soon returned and set off in pursuit. The boats traded tacks up the north shore with Double Trouble helmed by the “DT Massive” slowly pulling away. The Race Office shortened course at the club line on the leg down river with Double Trouble finishing first on the water and winning handsomely on corrected time from Harvest Moon.

There was a quick turnaround and the Race Officer sent the competitors for...

EAORA Houghton Cup Race: Saturday 29 August '09

Congratulations to Tony & Chuffy Merewether and crew – for winning the race.
Oystercatcher XXVI (R Matthews) finished in second place and Wambam (E Clay) was third.
Link to Results
The Houghton Cup originally was an 82 mile night race taking the fleet to and from the Crouch via the Sunk and Cork Light Vessels. This trophy, from the Crouch YC was originally presented in 1911 by Sidney Houghton, who was noted for his 1921 single-handed transatlantic crossing from Halifax, Novia Scotia to Burnham. This race now always takes place on the first day of Burnham Week. Courses are between 42 and 50 miles in length, starting from the Branklet buoy at the mouth of the Roach, travelling to the Swin Spitway...

Ron Pipe Buoy – Change of Position

CROUCH HARBOUR AUTHORITYNOTICE TO MARINERS No 4. of 2009

Please take notice that owing to reports of shoal water close south of the Ron Pipe Safe Water Mark buoy, the buoy has been moved approximately 100m north of its previous position.
The new position of Ron Pipe SWM buoy is N 51 deg 40.535’, E 01 deg 03.477’.
In this position Ron Pipe SWM is in approximately 6.00m water depth at LAT. Similar depths exist both north and south of the buoy but the edge of Swallow Tail Bank to the south of Ron Pipe shoals rapidly and mariners are therefore advised, if passing south of Ron Pipe SWM, to pass reasonably close...

Race Report: Short Handed Series Race 3 - 16 August '09

Sunday’s race was the last of the three races in the short-handed series.  Three yachts came to the line for the start and the race officer opted to send the fleet up-river against the strong tide and against winds of about 13 knots.

The course was set to carry the fleet up round the bend of the river as far as the Canewdon Buoy (opposite Canewdon Church).  Encore made a good start and Blue Movie, having been slightly over the line at the start, was swift to follow her, with Cheetah of Burnham bringing up the rear.  They then turned back down-river to come past the Club line, with spinnakers flying, as far as No.7 buoy (opposite the RCYC).   Here they turned once more for another leg up-river to...

Race Report: Feature Race Weekend - 08/09 August '09

Last weekend, 8th and 9th August, the Crouch Yacht Club had one of their Feature Race Weekends.  Four boats – Phillip and Sally Harbott’s “Mantra”, Harry Croker’s “Cheetah of Burnham”, Duncan & Beccy Haley’s “Double Trouble” and Alan Bartlett’s “Inn Spirit” took part in the racing with a couple of cruising boats joining in the fun together with the Committee Boat “Havana Papa”.

On Saturday the race was from Burnham-on-Crouch to Bradwell.  The race originally was scheduled to start from the Club Line but due to a lack of wind and with reports coming from down river that there was some wind there the start was moved to a Committee Boat start at the Branklet Buoy.  Here all boats got away well and in brilliant sunshine and with a...

Race Report: Short Handed Series Race 2 - 02 August '09

There were three yachts at the start – Piers Stanbury’s “Blue Movie”, Phillip and Sally Harbott’s “Mantra” and Harry Croker’s “Cheetah”.  In the south westerly wind on a sunny day the course was set to include being sent on a beat up to Cliff and Canewdon.  After the boats came back down to No 5 and before they were sent back upriver to Cliff Reach it was decided, due to the strength of the Spring Tide and the fluctuating strength of the wind, to shorten the course.  It was a close finish with “Cheetah” beating “Blue Movie” on corrected time by only nine seconds.  “Blue Movie” is leading the series at the moment with one race to go which is in two weeks time as next weekend the Crouch Yacht...

Race Report: Two Handed Series Race 2 - 26 July '09

The race had 4 starters out of a possible 7.  Wind speed at start was 22 knots but gusted to up to about 25 during the race.  The wind direction was SSE.

Both Mantra and Blue Movie were over the line at the start, however they pretty quickly caught up.  The course was set down river as far as far as Holliwell followed by a triangle round Redward and Clarks, before coming back up river, passing the club and going on to Cliff Reach and once again turning back to the club line. It was a fast race with the first boat arriving back after only one hour twenty-six minutes.  On corrected time: Mantra (Phillip & Sally Harbot) was first, followed by Blue Movie (Piers Stanbury), Encore (Paul Trueman), and...

Race Report: Short Handed Series Race 1 - 19 July '09

Today was the first race in the series.  Although we had a potential 13 participants in this race, only one came to the start for 10:30.  The starter was Blue Movie helmed by Piers Stanbury.  She was sent down the Roach as far as Wade then back up to Branklet.  The intention was for her to go on to No. 13 and round back to the line, but the race was shortened so that she finished as she crossed the line first time.

Race Report: Summer Series Race 5 - 12 July '09

In variable wind strengths of 15 to 23 knots, the seven boat fleet was sent on a beat to Cliff, Canewdon then back through the line to No. 3 followed by a second leg to Cliff and Canewdon. On the breezy downwind leg some braved the spinnaker with good rewards against the building tide. Bob Tubbs in Scaramouche had a good day winning by 23 seconds from Paul Trueman in Encore. Third was Oliver Southgate in Proper Job, a further 22 seconds behind. The overall winner for the Summer Series and the Dr John Hill Memorial Trophy was Paul Trueman in Encore followed by Harry Croker in Cheetah of Burnham and then Bob Tubbs in Scaramouche.

Race Report: Summer Series Race 4 - 05 July '09

This was race 4 of the CYC’s summer series. The race officer set an upriver start with a beat all the way to Short Pole Reach and then a run to Number 7, the race then being shortened on the club line. Duncan and Beccy Haley’s Double Trouble made the best start but in true Crouch River style the wind was fickle and shifty and she crossed tacks with both Nick Redfern’s Hot Doris and Paul Trueman’s Encore all the way to the turning mark, where a hole in the wind bunched up the fleet.  The run back to Number 7 was taxing, with large wind shifts, big holes and 16 knot gusts. Unfortunately Proper Job forgot to pass Black Point on the correct side and were forced to retire....

Race Report: Summer Series Race 3 - 28 June '09

Sunday the 28th of June saw 7 boats on the Crouch Yacht Club’s line for race 3 of the summer series. Unfortunately due to equipment problems Blue Movie was forced to retire before the start. When the course was being set the wind was quite light and fickle, so the decision was to send fleet down river on the last of the ebb to Horse Shoal with a loop around number 1 and then a run up the river to number 11, finally rounding number 5 before finishing back on the club line.
Just before the start the wind steadied down to a 9 knot easterly. Oliver Southgate’s projection 762 Proper job was closest to the start but had not reached full boat speed and was quickly overtaken by...

Race Report: Summer Series Race 2 - 21 June '09

On a light airs day, boats were sent to Cliff, Canewdon twice. Returning through the line at just after 12.00, the fleet were sent on to No. 3 and unfortunately on the way back the wind died. Once Proper Job (Oliver Southgate) had retired after touching a buoy, places changed significantly given the lack of wind and building foul tide. Eventually, Bob Tubbs in Scaramouche crossed the line first followed by Moondust. The winner on corrected time was Moondust followed by Bob Tubbs in Scaramouche and Philip and Sally Harbott in Mantra.

Report: Crouch Yacht Club Open Day 06 June '09 - Big Success

The Crouch Yacht Club initiative to invite people to experience Yacht Sailing at their Open Day on 06 June was an absolute success.

The offer to enjoy a yacht sailing experience on the River Crouch was specifically aimed at people who hadn’t had the opportunity to try sailing in the past and who may not know how they could get involved. The Club is particularly keen to make the sport more accessible – especially to those living in Burnham itself. Owners kindly put forward their boats, skills and crew to provide an hour and a half of river time for all our guests. The experience on offer was the chance to go onboard, help set the sails and cruise the river for about an hour. 35 happy people took up...
