Race Report: Short Handed Series Race 3 - 16 August '09

Sunday’s race was the last of the three races in the short-handed series.  Three yachts came to the line for the start and the race officer opted to send the fleet up-river against the strong tide and against winds of about 13 knots.

The course was set to carry the fleet up round the bend of the river as far as the Canewdon Buoy (opposite Canewdon Church).  Encore made a good start and Blue Movie, having been slightly over the line at the start, was swift to follow her, with Cheetah of Burnham bringing up the rear.  They then turned back down-river to come past the Club line, with spinnakers flying, as far as No.7 buoy (opposite the RCYC).   Here they turned once more for another leg up-river to Cliff Reach buoy and back again to No.7 and thence to the Club line.

When they re-appeared after their first leg up-river and back, Encore was in the lead with Cheetah of Burnham in second spot and Blue Movie bringing up the rear.  The order remained that way for the rest of the race.  When the handicaps were calculated Cheetah proved to be first with Blue Movie second and Encore third.

Since Cheetah had already scored a first the previous race, she won the series with Blue Movie second and Encore third.

Next Sunday is the Hills Drinks Trophy race which is a warm-up for Burnham Week with a Committee Boat start at 10.30 near the Branklet Buoy.
